How Does Whistling Work?

How is it that when we whistle, we automatically know the right air pressure and tongue positions to hit just the right note?

You don’t automatically know. If you’re an adult, you’ve likely whistled thousands upon thousands of times before, so you’ve learned the intuitive feeling of where your tongue, lips, and teeth need to be to make a noise. With enough practice you can even intentionally produce a specific tone on command.

Chances are you are not hitting “just the right note” unless you have perfect pitch, but you’re getting close enough.

Blow a note.
Recognise its pitch, then adjust to produce the required sound.

Do that a few times and from memory you’ll have a rough ride of the mouth shape to make for an approximate tone.
