how does wifi in cars work?

Like, new cars that have wifi and “unlimited data”. Does that go through your cell provider? Is wifi in your car an extra monthly charge?? how is this a “perk” when my phone already has unlimited data?

It’s tied to a service plan, often through a provider chosen by the manufacturer.

It’s a nice convenience for marginal reception areas, or if a passenger is close to their data limit for the month

It’s a hotspot, it uses cellular service (Verizon for instance). The benefit would be for say connecting a laptop, when your personal cellular plan for your phone has hotspot as an additional fee or a small data cap; maybe your own cellular provider doesn’t have service in an area but the provider the car uses does.

The cost depends on the manufacturer and any plans they offer.

Mines a hotspot that I legit just figured out a few months ago (have had the car for a few years). Mines thru AT&T end is a monthly subscription that can be turned on/off. Can’t believe it took me that long to figure out.
