Solar panels generate electricity when the sun is shining. Obviously, they produce more electricity when the sun shines more. That means that they produce the most electricity at about noon each day. Unfortunately, humans tend to use the most electricity after dark. So solar power drops right as electricity demand is rising. This can be a problem, because you can’t really just turn a fossil fuel power plant off and on that easily.

Wind power helps because wind blows more or less consistently throughout the day. This helps smooth out the generation curve, so you don’t have to do as dramatic a ramp up of non-green power plants
