It’s a Benzodiazepine that interacts with certain areas of the brain, so it takes away the anxiety by blocking the release of a chemical that’s involved in the physical reactions to fear (that anxious feeling). It’s not a cure, but it’s effective enough that it allows you to think a bit more clearly and do what needs to be done to eventually stop needing pills and do it on your own. There’s not really any way to explain how the brain works to a 5 year old. But, long story short, it acts as a depressant on the brain to make it less active which in the case of an overactive anxious brain can bring it back closer to “normal”.

There are two chemicals called Glutamate and Gamma Aminobutyric acid(GABA) that have opposite effects in the brain. Basically, Glutamate makes you more alert and GABA makes you less alert. Xanax increases the GABA in the brain which causes you to be less alert and allows you to relax.
