I noticed an image circulating of an IMAX reel used for the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie Oppenheimer being [massive](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/jul/19/oppenheimer-imax-reel-18kms-melbourne-rare-where-to-watch-australia). But I realized something…I have no idea what IMAX actually means. I’ve of course heard it before but have no idea how a camera that produces its type of film works and also why the film for this particular movie is so large. Is it because it’s a longer movie or what?

Instead of standard 35mm film, it uses 70mm film. And instead of filming it vertically (where the width of the picture equals the width of the film strip) it shoots it horizontally (where the *height* of the picture equals the width of the film strip). This gives it **much** greater detail, but also makes the equipment and projection very large and complicated.
But most modern movies are digital now.
