How far down do our fingernails and toenails go? Where/how do they start?

1.47K views

I know they’re made of the same stuff as our hair but how are they produced? And (extra dumb question) how do they know what direction to grow in? Was painting my nails today and cut down on my cuticles and there was more nail!!!!!! Does it ever end???? One big nail from our fingers to our toes!?!?!?

The nerves right behind your cuticles tell your nail to gro outwards.

Your nail stops about a half inch further than your cuticles.
