how google maps 3D pics work

I mean the ones where you can drop down from the map and gain a 3D picture from like any place of the world. How does it work, satellite pics or what?

The aerial shots (afaik) are all from satellite images. They can map the height of buildings and such due to the curved surface allowing different angles of the same building to be photographed.

As far as street view (ground level 360 images), they literally have cars with 360 degree cameras on them that drive around and take pictures every few feet. It took years but they seem to have most roads recorded.
