How is a Google Pixel phone able to recognize thousands of different songs it hears but only use a small amount of data stored locally to do so?

Although the amount of local data is small, that App used is linked to Googles massive repository of information and the wider Internet and the App searches those, like how Google Search works and does not search the local device.

If the device doesn’t have Internet access, then it won’t have access to any results.
