How is a skin graft performed?

The most common kind is a split thickness skin graft. This is a thin layer of mostly epidermis (the very out layer of skin). It is harvested from by using a planing machine that shaves a very thin layer of skin. That thin layer is then placed over the wound that is being grafted, and sewn into place. It eventually heals into place on the underlying tissue, and any holes are filled in by new skin cells. Holes are put in the graft to allow fluids to seep out as it’s healing (instead of building up underneath and preventing healing). The holes also allow the graft to be stretched more to cover bigger areas
