how is Airdrop so fast at transferring data?

Airdrop uses wifi for the data transfer (Bluetooth for the initial discovery) and wifi is pretty fast.
Combine that with the data being sent being generally small ( a few photos) then it doesn’t take long to transfer that via a wifi connection.
