How is AV1 better than HEVC x264 and x265?

Does it give the same quality as HEVC but at smaller size?

It advertises as 30% higher quality at the same bit rate. So you could either do smaller size same quality or same size higher quality. The downside is it takes longer to encode and not all chip support it yet, so it will probably be a year or 2 before it’s really mainstream.

If you want to dive into the algorithm differences, on page two of this article there’s a table of the two side by side and how they work under the hood.

when new silicone arrives, most of the time it has new features/possibilities. they can be used to further optimize existing algorithms, either to be faster or produce more efficient results. as other poster mentioned, 30% better quality at the same bitrate. it’s actually a quite remarkable feat, cause today’s algorithms are already pretty advanced as they are.

but is it better? well, on one hand yes – on the other, the new algorithms obsolete older hardware. the rig that can easily play h264 may not be enough to play the new codec.

AV1 has more and more powerful coding tools than those standards, which allows it to have better coding efficiency (but not always at the same compute cost).
