How is it possible that gas cylinders (think of office chairs) with moving parts do not leak out over time?

They do eventually. Gas springs have been used for years in construction, automotive, medical, aerospace, and many other industries. They’ve been engineered to be reliable and long lasting but will wear out eventually. Office chairs tend to be replaced when they lose function, but you may be more likely to see a failed gas spring in an automobile hatchback that doesn’t lift its own weight

Gaskets and seals. They probably do leak but such a small amount you won’t notice in the life time of the chair

Mine at work leaks. And if you’re leaning a certain way it leaks quickly. I’m guessing the internal has a V shaped seal that should seal better as the pressure increases (when you sit in the chair). They do wear over time and in my case they can leak if the load isn’t centered.
