How is it possible that protons and electrons never decay?

Logically speaking, this seems like an impossible concept to grasp. We see and expect things all things to eventually come to an end, from the mightiest stars to the smallest living things.

How is it possible that certain particles will never, ever lose pieces of their mass or become smaller over time? How can they last forever?

“Decay” does not mean that. It just means that *on their own* they tend to disintegrate over time. Both protons and electrons can become energy if they hit an anti-particle (an anti-proton or a positron); also protons can be broken apart as they are made of quarks.

The real surprising part in my humble opinion is the particle decay: why does something, without external influence, suddenly break apart?
