Butter is mostly fat content with little water so it isn’t a friendly environment for bacterial growth. Salted butter has even less water so that’s why people keep their salted butter out in a butter dish instead of the fridge. Contrary what others has said it does not go rancid. Lived in farm country geowing up and the butter we kept on the counter tasted the same as the fresh butter from the dairy farm.
