How is it that sometimes you can sustain a big injury and not feel any pain?

My sister got a nail stuck in her leg and, even though it was somewhat deep and bleeding, she said she didn’t feel any pain until I noticed it and told her. According to her, as soon as I mentioned it, she suddenly felt the pain of it in her leg.

(I’m pretty sure this is biology!)

Adrenaline and other hormones. When I was a kid, I slipped and fell on gravel and I basically scratched both my knees at the point that I started bleeding like a fountain, but I felt no pain. I literally felt normal. I realised what conditions my knees were in only when I felt something fluid that was dripping down my legs, just to realise that it was blood
