How is it that sometimes you can sustain a big injury and not feel any pain?

My sister got a nail stuck in her leg and, even though it was somewhat deep and bleeding, she said she didn’t feel any pain until I noticed it and told her. According to her, as soon as I mentioned it, she suddenly felt the pain of it in her leg.

(I’m pretty sure this is biology!)

Shock. It’s one way your body helps you survive something really bad…you go in to autopilot and hopefully you’re able to seek help before the shock goes away.
