How is it that we can get scratched or cut hard even to break skin and bleed through our pants/clothes and not rip the piece of clothing in the process?

Happened multiple times at work scraping against a piece of metal while wearing thick cargo pants.

The clothing can move against your skin, even with a sharp object poking at it. Your skin doesn’t move (too much) against your insides.
