A common (and the easiest) trick is to have the ordinary audience member actually be an actor working with you. You’ll arrange a number ahead of time, it’s all scripted out.
Another version of this trick is called the guess ahead. Say I ask you to name a color, but I tell you I’m going to write down your guess first. I will actually write, say the three of clubs. Then when you say pink, I will tell you to name a tv show, and write “pink” on a slip of paper. I can do this for as long as I want until I then force the three of clubs on you at the end of the trick, and then reveal my “predictions”
They’re not guessing numbers. They’re using psychological tricks to make people think of a number they’ve already picked beforehand. It’s pretty basic mentalism skills.
