While I can’t be 100% sure without seeing it, there are a few possibilities. It is possible for the radio to use multiple antennae to get a more reliable, and faster connection. If your phone has 1 and your laptop has 2, for example, it could improve the signal. Equipment with 4 exists.
Also the simple fact that a laptop has more electricity available to it than a phone means it can transmit at higher powers. Remember that wifi is 2-way communication. Even if you can see the access point/router, it might not be able to hear you. A laptop with a more powerful transmitter might have better luck by yelling back while your phone’s power is like a whisper.
One or both of these explanations are possible.
