When there r dozens of planes in close proximity with paratroopers dropping out, how do they not get tangled with other jumpers or get hit by other planes?

If the trailing planes are all slightly higher than the planes in front of them, no one jumping out of the front planes can get hit by the planes behind them.
The pilots don’t follow directly behind and below the next airplane. They would be at the same altitude or higher. And since the parachuter is falling down, they can be at the same altitude.
Pilots would also avoid following another airplane as you don’t want to fly in their wake.
