If you are in Texas – pretty fucking powerful, unfortunately. Although the right wing oil millionaires in West Texas are the true powers behind the throne.
It depends on which state and which person holds the office.
Attorneys general usually have the power to investigate crimes against the state on behalf of the residents, and represent the state in lawsuits. In my state, they can also present an investigation to a group called a grand jury, which can charge someone with a crime.
It’s also a political position, so if a particular attorney general is politically strong, that power is reflected in their actions. You see this with the use of attorney general opinions, which help influence how laws are interpreted and used.
