how scented deodorants don’t mask their own fragrances?

Deodorants make you sweat less, and/or make the bacteria that metabolize your sweat into smelly compounds metabolize less. Meanwhile, they don’t rely on any of those processes for their own odor. That odor is already present as volatile compounds that evaporate from your body heat.

“Masking fragrances,” can be one or both of the following:

* Covering up the smell with a stronger, more pleasant smell.
* Killing bacteria that’s causing the smell in the first place.

Neither of the above are capturing the smell or anything along those lines, so there’s really no such thing as “masking it’s own fragrance.”
