How soldering stations control the iron tip temperature?

Well, from what i can understand, they don’t simply use a dimmer or variable resistor because that would just regulate the amount the current going through the iron’s resistance, and thus it’s power, or amount of heat it would be able to deliver. Do they control the temperature by adjusting the voltage that is going to it? Sorry if i said something dumb here. Thanks!

They use a variable resistor in the tip that acts like a temp sensor or thermostat. Once the tip reaches the set temperature, the station turns the power on and off to the heater element to maintain that temperature. Some stations also have a sleep switch that turns off the power to the tip when the handle is placed back onto the iron holder for a period of time.
