Individual battery cells are a self contained unit which need to be separated from each other. This separation requires a casing or some other type of separator material to prevent liquid or gel contents in the cells from mixing.

Solid state batteries are completely solid and so can act as their own separator, so multiple cells can be built into a single casing without the need for any separation material.
