So there are a number of things going on here. I won’t go into detail in how pressure pulls smoke through the downstem/percs as this isn’t really “where the magic happens”
What is important about how a bong works is the smoke bubbling through the water. When you combust cannabis, the “smoke” contains a ton of different things, but we’re going to focus on two. Vaporized resin, and soot.
Now some of the soot in the bubbles gets stuck in the water when it makes contact with the surface of the water within the bubble. This provides a little bit of filtration as the soot isn’t entering your lungs and instead gets stuck in the bongwater. Next, a bit of the vaporized resin condenses on the edge of the water within the bubbles. This can actually weaken the taste and potency, and this happens when people go overboard with percolators.
Lastly, the water cools the smoke, which does two things. First, the smoke is less irritating to your respiratory system when it’s not too hot (and not too cold either), and second, the smoke condenses so you end up with much more smoke in your lungs. This condensing of the smoke is how people are able to rip half a joint worth of cannabis in 1 breath and have it all fit into their lungs.
Smoke responsibly and don’t touch cannabis if you’re not in your mid 20’s yet unless you need it for a serious medical issue!
