supernovae are much brighter than you think.

A crude but effective example is if you were on earth, and the sun went superonova, and you took a hydrogen bomb, and detonated it touching your eye, the super nova would still be 1000000000x brighter.

Its hard NOT to notice one in our very own galaxy.
