How was the first computer programmed? With what? How does it know 1 means yes and 0 means no?

I can’t explain it but the movie The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch shows how that was done. Obviously artistic license and all that (“based on a true story”) but it was really interesting to see how those early computers were created and worked.
