In a past Ice-age slow moving ice/a glacier carved the fucker out of the mountains pretty much.
You can see that it was formed by a large glacier moving instead of a river formation because of the gap having a U shaped valley instead of a V shaped valley. Running water in a river carved out more narrow V shaped valleys, glaciers widen out the valley.
