In the ancient world, tribes such as the Germanic people discovered bones or fossils too.

Except they identified them as Giants or remains of earlier mythological creatures.

There are even Sagas about these stories, where heroes find the lair of such creatures.

Dinosaur fossils were “discovered” a couple of hundred years ago by European science guys who wrote about what they saw. Other people had been strolling past them for eons but just whistled and pointed.

“discovered” means recorded by someone who then told someone about it and then it was recognized by someone else. Just like the “worlds largest/smallest/most/etc” is a record of what has been told and recognized, but that doesn’t mean it’s not more common or someone else hasn’t done it. discovery is an institutional idea

I’m almost certain that dinosaur fossils are the reason so many unrelated global cultures have myths about dragons

They were probably classified way before as Dragons and other mythological creatures. They were only scientifically classified in the 1800’s plus the fact that we only started to actually dig deeper in the earth around the same time.

They did but no one really understood what they were, Its where you get stories of cyclops and dragons from. If I recall correctly there was a wooly mammoth skull was found in europe and they thought they had found the skull of a cyclops.

In North America, the local people said they’d stumbled across the burial ground of “big people ” and left them the heck alone out of respect. I wonder what sense they would have made of a T. rex skull…

They did come across them. That’s how legends of dragons and other mythological creatures began.

I’m convinced someone found a triceratops skulls several hundred years ago and thought “Dragon!”

If you consider people say 500 years ago finding skeletons of big dinos then it’s not unreasonable to imagine the stories about dragons originating from this.
