The reason why is because as trees grow they need more space for good soil and sunlight and inanimate objects are perfect for this because it ensures that a tree can expand and spread its babies around.

Take my answer with a grain of salt as it is only an educated guess but it’s probably because fences cast shadows on the trees, so the trees expand around it to reach for the sunlight
