How/why does shaving foam/cream work?

Shaving foam is basically three things: lubricant, aerosol, and stuff that expands evenly when aerosol is released into it. You don’t need a lot of lubrication to reduce irritation on the skin, so concentrating it into a small volume and letting it expand when in use allows you to spread it evenly across a large area.
