how would an underground structure like derinkuyu fair during a significant earthquake?

I tagged physics but I’m sure this covers geology, planetary science, engineering, maybe more. I’m learning about the underground structure called derinkuyu, and I wonder, why wouldn’t an earthquake, even a small one, absolutely collapse this whole structure?

It depends on your definition of significant earthquake, and also how far away any underground city may be from a fault line. Fault lines are used as a measure of what is the highest possible magnitude quake that’s possible in that region. I don’t know how far derinkuyu is/was from the nearest fault line, but any underground city is going to be at a much higher risk of full destruction than a city on the surface.
