What would the process be, what does it mean to use a surrogate mother for your baby, etc.

Usually it means IVF but the embryo is then inserted into the surrogate rather than the biological mother. The surrogate then gestates and births a baby who is not related to her.

Alternately, a surrogate might be impregnated and become the biological mom. This would be an option for gay couples or for straight couples where the wife can’t/shouldn’t/won’t get pregnant or for whatever reason doesn’t want to commit their genes to another generation.
