how xG is calculated in football ?

I keep on seeing people on twitter talk about the xG of teams or players in the prem, but would like to know how it’s calculated ? I assume some statistics ?
Also if anyone know why this type of analyse (seems to) have become more popular in recent years too ?

It refers to [“expected goals”](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40699431#:~:text=%22Expected%20goals%22%20is%20a%20metric,what%20we%20know%20about%20it.)

Basically it tries to assign a quality value between 0 and 1, as to the likelihood of any given shot ending up as a goal.

As to finding those quality values…analyze a metric *shitload* of shots in order to gauge the likelihood and assign a specific number.
