I feel like I’ve seen a lot of pictures lately of some block of whatever (rock, metal, corrugated steel) standing upright and someone commenting on their new “monolith”. Where did this come from and what does it mean?

Someone put up a monolith in a remote part of Utah and it made the news. People are now putting up copies in other places. It means that some people are willing to put up a monolith in order to get some attention.
