Best guess: Oil is very energy dense but can interfere with the respiration of creatures big and small. Engine oil also contains detergents and heavy metals that can further poison a lot of things. But there are some bacteria that can survive the toxins and digest the oil. For them, it’s a high energy buffet with no competition, no predators, and plenty of room to reproduce. They reproduce enough and the micro becomes macro. I’d bet that’s your slime
