As you say owls are good at camouflage. It would be very strange if you would have been able to see them during the day as they would not have been doing a good job of hiding. Owls generally look like tree trunks and will find suitable tall trees far from people to hide in. They can also hide in hollowed out trunks where they make their nests. You do need a good eye to be able to spot a camouflaged owl high up in a tree hidden by all the branches but finding one in its nest is almost impossible.

The owls on my property live in nests they built in among browned palm fronds on my palm trees. Some very early mornings you can see them dive bombing finches and mice from their nests.

They chill in trees and other places and will sleep too. Because of the colour of their feathers it’s quite hard to spot them. I’ve seen several owls during my lifetime, but only because someone already told me there’s owls in that particular spot.

They nest. Very often their nests are built within holes in deadwood branches of trees. Unless you are digging around in big mature woodland at 10ft or more above the ground there is no reason you would ever typically see them in the day.

Maybe you live in a place where there’s not that many owls? They live in barns and holes in trees, some live in holes in the ground, and some, usually large species build nests. They are active in mornings/evenings, not dead of night.

chances are you just arent at the right place right time. ive seen alot of owls in day and night (night obviously being harder because its dark for us). daytime owls you just need to know where to look. i saw them because i knew where they were nesting. barn owls were up in a box in a tree. burrowing owls were on the ground in a preserve. they are actually still awake and “active” during the day. just not as active as they are at night.

so, looking for an owl to see in the day, you will need to know where its nesting so you have the general idea incase it comes out because it will be less active during the day so you need to know in advance where to look

for seeing an owl at night, thats very hard. owls usually fly very silently and camouflage well with thier surroundings, but chances are you have heard one out calling.

if you really want to see one out in the wild in person i recommend checking out your local audubon chapter or other birding groups near you
