Ice Hockey/concert stadiums

I went to a concert at a venue that also hosts Ice Hockey games. My sister in law asked a question I have no answer to. How is the floor (which functioned basically as a mosh pit) transform into an ice rink? I know that there are mats taken up, but how is water/ice installed? How is it then brought to ice temperature? How long does it take?

The ice stays there year round. They build everything else on top of the ice. The ice is built on top of concrete that has coolers in it to keep the ice at the right temperature, in addition to the stadium generally being kept cool overall.

Here’s a video of it the other way, but it works fine to see how it does, this is transforming from basketball to ice, as you can see, the ice is there already, its always there. Stadiums can transform into whatever they need often in a few hours and are specifically designed to do this fast and efficient, as its very common to re-configure stadiums, often on a daily basis to suit whatever is needed for the stadium that day. Any day a stadium isn’t in use, its wasted, so you always want something happening.

There’s refrigerant lines running through the floor that freeze the ice. They install the ice with hoses layer by layer. For hockey they put down a thin layer of water, let it freeze then paint it and then add more water to finish the ice surface.

The ice is there all the time. There’s insulated boards that get put down on top of the ice. They’re all marked and numbered they all have specific spots.

During the hockey season, the ice will stay more or less permanently. They will put boards on to cover up the ice for other events.

The ice has a cooling system underneath it that will keep it below freezing. A layer of insulated temporary flooring is installed on top. The boards can easily be removed.

Or turn the water on, install the people and you might have a mushy moss pit
