if black is all colors and white is no colors what is gray?

We have values for each color, 0 – 256, back is all the lights off, white is all the lights on. Grey is each color equally, but not all the way. Like there is one color gray. There isn’t even one way too spell it, 256 shades of grey. I guess it’s a gray area
