It seems like the majority of comments miss the “3 times a day” part of the question.
In the US it was adapted from European settlers. Europeans eventually settled on 3 meals for whatever reason. Since, it’s been boasted as what people should follow for diet. There is no strong basis for this.
However, there are several cultures that eat more or less than 3 meals a day. Some include snacks and some don’t.
