If I were to take a really really really (light years) long stick and push something on the end of it, would it happen “instantly”?

Obviously theoretical but if I took a light year long stick and say pushed a button at the other end would that button be pushed at the same time for me as say someone standing at the button? How does the frame of reference work when physically moving something? And could that “work” as a method of instant communication?

I have wondered about this question for years! Fascinating that the speed of sound through the material is the same as the speed of causality on that material. Thank you for asking!

You wouldn’t be able to push it, its against the law of physics. If a material has that much lenght, likewise its weight would be incalculable much as well.

Man, as a dude I thought my kinda sword shaped stick was a find. A stick like THAT!?

Well, that would just make my day.

It would have to have no flexibility at all, for it to work as quickly as possible.

Otherwise, if you look at a slow-motion video of an arrow being fired from a bow, you’ll notice that the arrow bends, and with the light-years long stick, you’d have the same effect.
