if objects expand when exposed to heat, why do objects shrink if there is too much heat?

It depends on the object. If they’re infused with a lot of water (like vegetables or mushrooms, for instance), the heat will make it evapourate, making everything shrink down. Metals, on the other hand, don’t have much water in them, so they expand in high temperatures, just like you’d expect.
