if selfie cameras predictably create distortion around the outer edges, why can’t you just undo it with a filter that compensates for said distortion?

If you’re talking about actual edge distortion – You can, and some phones have options to apply distortion control to help compensate for this.

If you’re talking about general distortion (such as objects not really appearing the same shape as with a different lens or in the mirror) – this is the result of the focal length of the lens and not really something you can compensate for.

We can and do…

I’m cameras without computational correction, a wide angle lens should distort the center causing you to have a bulbous face with a huge nose. Totally normal lens effect.

You can. But it won’t give you a rectangular image. Folks seem to profer bigger images with distortion.

You’re probably talking about perspective distortion, which is caused by holding the camera too close. That’s why selfie sticks exist. If you hold the camera farther away then it looks fine. If you don’t have or want to use a selfie stick, then just hold the camera at arm’s length, basically as far away as possible.

As for why you get perspective distortion, it’s because that’s just what you look like from super close up. Put your face that close up to someone else and it will look like that.
