If you had an auger screw shape in a tube with only air in it, would turning the screw push air out the top?

Can an auger shape in a tube if sealed appropriately, transfer air in the way it can a material?

Does it push the air up and out?

What you have described is basically a box fan with weird proportions. It’s not the best design for moving air, but it’ll do it.

It would sort of work, but not very well. The reason an augur works is because the material (dirt or water) will tend to stay to one side under the force of gravity. It creates a pocket that is pushed upwards by the screw action.

Air on the other hand is free to flow up and around the screw so you just end up with a weird, inefficient fan.

This is an animation of a screw type air compressor. It transports air but also increases the pressure. I’m
Sure with a modification you could not compress the air seeing as that is the last step of this process.
