If you had an auger screw shape in a tube with only air in it, would turning the screw push air out the top?

Can an auger shape in a tube if sealed appropriately, transfer air in the way it can a material?

Does it push the air up and out?

It would sort of work, but not very well. The reason an augur works is because the material (dirt or water) will tend to stay to one side under the force of gravity. It creates a pocket that is pushed upwards by the screw action.

Air on the other hand is free to flow up and around the screw so you just end up with a weird, inefficient fan.
