: I’m growing some tomatoes in pots and I keep seeing that they need two inches of water a week. What does this mean?

Rainfall is measured in inches (a measure of height rather than volume), because rain falls “evenly” across the earth, so if you have a wide dish and a narrow cylinder, they will accumulate rain water to the same level (same height). The wide dish will accumulate MORE volume of water, but the water is “spread out” cause the dish is wide, so the height of it will be the same as in the narrow cylinder.
So what they mean is you need to put in 2 inches of height * the area of your pots (pi r^2 ), and figure out how many ounces of water that is. So for the typical tomato pot of 18 inches diameter, the amount of water is pi * 2 * 18^2 / 4 = 508 cubic inches = 2.2 gallons of water per week. Basically, 1.5 bottles of water (24 oz) per day, per pot.
