“NLP has become very popular over the years. This popularity may have been driven by the fact that practitioners can use it in many different fields and contexts.
However, the broad ideas that NLP is built upon, and the lack of a formal body to monitor its use, mean that the methods and quality of practice can vary considerably. In any case, clear and impartial evidence to support its effectiveness has yet to emerge.
For these reasons, it is possible that good marketing has also contributed to the widespread popularity of NLP, particularly in the commercial sector.”
As has been noted, yes it is pseudoscience without any actual verified benefits.
Your explanation is pretty much spot on – the main hypothesis is that you can change yourself, for example become more successful, by changing your self-image.
Unfortunately just changing how you see yourself does not necessarily make you better at anything practical, that requires changing strategies, methods, goals etc.
It is “science” that is very widely marketed around the world. It is actually very useful. You see it everyday everywhere. On the TV, commercials, around your friends and family, any groups of people.
It describes how people react to each other and how you can use words to achieve your desired outcome.
I. E. If you look at Pepsi it uses famous people presence as to show you that their socio-hierarchy is way above you so it’s impression is, if you start drinking Pepsi you will jump above levels and be higher valued person. Of curse it is bullshit and the only thing you’ll get is hypertension and obesity.
Some smart people who know how to use NLP they can actually do loads of good with it and he’ll others but 95% of all those NLP masters are nothing but scammers.
