IMAX uses much bigger physical film than regular movies. Normal movies are filmed on 35mm film and are run through the projector vertically, while IMAX is on 70mm film and runs horizontal, which means a 9x bigger image and higher resolution. Normal film also uses part of the space for recording audio – IMAX puts the audio on a separate track to make more room for the image. Since the image is so big, it requires special projectors. It’s best viewed on bigger, curved, specially designed IMAX theater screens.

Movies are made by taking many pictures over a short amount of time and you see them so fast you think its movement. The pictures the camera makes for imax movies are bigger.
