In a TV series / film, how are scenes where a baby becomes upset shot?

I’m currently watching TV and there was a scene where a baby began crying. I thought they may just edit the sound of a baby crying in, however you can see the baby’s face and the audio and video synced up so the baby must’ve been crying.

I can’t imagine they purposely make babies cry for these scenes so how are they done?

Babies love crying. You just wait till they’re in the mood, film it, then edit it in with the other parts. You probably wouldn’t pan to the baby crying in a single shot, there are cuts.

1) Set up shot with lights, cameras, and set, such as a crib.

2) Ask parent with baby to participate. You will need two babies for legal reasons so they don’t get overworked.

3) Babies cry routinely when they are wet, hungry, or tired. Their parents recognize the signs.

4) When parent sees baby is about to cry, place baby in set and quickly shoot footage.

5) Change, feed, or rest the baby.

The crew that does this stuff is usually “second unit” and while they’re waiting around, the “main unit” shoots other scenes.
