In the most simple of terms, they are a star which has an extremely high surface temperature, and which as a consequence shine extremely brightly. However as there are almost none of them even remotely close to earth, they don’t appear bright in our night sky.
They are quite rare, and as far as we can tell there is more than one way for an already-large star to evolve into a W-R star. But because they’re so unusual, and so far away, the ways in which they form are still not completely understood.
